The traditional tractor boat haul
Every morning in season, a unique spectacle takes place on the beach of Quiberville: the traditional tractor haul of boats for the fish market. These small flat-bottomed boats are called Doris. Traditionally wooden and used in the 19th century by ships fishing for cod on the Newfoundland banks, they were soon adopted for coastal fishing by local professionals. Today, lighter aluminium has replaced wood, but the tradition continues in Quiberville.
The Sea Festival
Like many towns and villages along the Alabaster Coast, the Sea Festival is celebrated every summer in Quiberville. The programme includes a mass at the church, a blessing of the boats specially decorated with flowers, and a wreath-laying ceremony at sea. This traditional festival attracts many visitors every year!
Professional fishermen
There are still three professional fishermen in Quiberville. Every morning, they set up their stalls directly on the seafront, guaranteeing absolute freshness and a very short supply chain. Don’t hesitate to ask them for cooking tips! If you don’t feel like cooking, the seafront restaurants often source directly from them.
Fishing & boating
For fishing enthusiasts, Quiberville offers plenty of activities. The boating association organises an annual competition as well as the traditional harengade in November, where the famous boat-smoked herring is enjoyed. And of course, the beach means shore fishing, especially during spring tides: the perfect chance to collect shellfish and crabs!
Hiking & cycling
Whether you prefer hiking or cycling, the Saâne valley is your playground. With its many routes combining sea and countryside, and access to the GR21 trail, you’ll enjoy breathtaking landscapes that will leave you amazed.
